Our Mission

Growing Up Africa is a registered not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life in underserved communities.   The organization collaborates with university students, designers, building professionals, local community leaders, and global partners in order to develop and build its projects.  The projects are based on an 80/20 model whereby eighty percent of the construction budget is provided by in-kind material donations (product sponsorship) from international companies and the remaining twenty percent is generated through funding,.  All design professionals, engineers, and architects provide their services for free.

Started in 2008 by Deborah Terhune, Growing Up Africa has had a successful track record with two completed projects and a third, the Devland SOWETO Education Campus, which is currently under construction.

Our Founder

Deborah Terhune is the founder and CEO of Growing Up Africa.  Inspired by an early passion for development, Deborah began her career in Pennsylvania where she converted underutilized historic buildings for mixed-use as part of a city-wide vision for urban renewal.  For her achievements she was recognized with the Distinguished Mayor’s Award for Restoration and Conversion of Historic Properties and the Outstanding Young Women of America Award.

Deborah’s philanthropic work has always benefitted from her expertise in community development and her ability to bring together disparate groups of people to work toward a positive goal.  Deborah is a founding member of the Allentown Preservation Association and a longstanding member of Urban Land Institute.  She has worked as a facilitator for the collaboration between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Museum of Africa Art in New York City.  She was instrumental in raising funds to build a church in Oshakati, Namibia, and she remains an active participant in numerous charities in United States and South Africa.

Our Sponsors

Eighty percent of the construction budget for our building projects is provided by in-kind (product sponsorship) material contributions.  Our work would not be possible without our sponsors.
