Johannesburg, South Africa

The Future

Our current project is under construction, nearing completion in 2021, a 7000 square metre campus site in Devland, Soweto.

The purpose-built structure showcases low-cost and locally appropriate sustainable strategies, utilise locally sourced materials, and upskilled and educated unemployed youth and local construction workers. Students and community youth will learn the nuts and bolts of building alongside experienced construction teams, and in doing so, cultivate entrepreneurship while focusing on skills transfer.

The Devland project provides a safe and nurturing environment for collaborative and individual learning and growth.

New Hope

Happy Homes Pre School

Justica, Mpumalanga

The Happy Homes Project Initiative launched by Growing Up Africa to improve early education in the village community of Justica, on the fringe of the Kruger National Park.

The Happy Homes pre-school aims to improve early education standards in this impoverished area of South Africa, and thereby encouraging and empowering the people of the community to take ownership and independence of their children's early development.

The school fills a desperate need to provide essential early childhood education to rural youngsters, and what began as a distressing problem has become a shining example of what hard work, compassion and teamwork can achieve.

Empowerment

Thingo Kids

Cosmo City, South Africa

Thingo Kids is an early childhood development (ECD) and training centre located in Cosmo City, Johannesburg. As the first official pre-school in the low-income neighbourhood of Cosmo City, the ECD centre provides up to 80 of the city's neediest children with spaces to learn and play.

In addition to its core education spaces, the facility also includes a teacher training centre where teachers from the surrounding area can attend seminars, as well as more communal areas such as a dining area and a semi-outdoor gathering space.

Standing on an elevated site, Thingo Kids became a beacon of hope for the surrounding neighbourhood, winning esteemed international architectural and educational awards.
